近年来，随着哈尔滨乃至黑龙江经济、文化的不断发展，哈尔滨机场年旅客吞吐量也不断攀升。继2013年旅客吞吐量突破1000万人次后，去年，哈尔滨机场旅客吞吐量纪录再次刷新，达到1200万人次。但目前哈尔滨机场年旅客吞吐量设计标准仅为666万人次，早已超负荷运行，迫切需要扩建以满足未来发展需求。
在国家、省、市相关部门的推动下，哈尔滨机场今年将大面积实施机场扩建工程，预计工程将于2017年竣工。据悉，工程将新建功能面积16万平方米的T2航站楼及45个机位的站坪、停车场等设施。工程竣工后，机场航站楼总面积将达到22.6万平方米，容量是目前6万余平方米的近4倍，机位总数达到76个，可满足2020年旅客吞吐量1800万人次、货邮吞吐量17.5万吨、年起降14.1万架次的使用需求。同时，机场的“正门脸”也将“整容”，使之更加凸显欧式风格，与机场建筑整体风格相适应。T2航站楼桩基础已完工。

T2 terminal pile foundation has been completed.
